Fredericton Hosts the Maritime Cup

January 18, 2018 – Fredericton (New Brunswick)

Wostawea Cross Country Ski Club and the City of Fredericton are partnering to host the Maritime Cup on Saturday January 20 and Sunday 21, 2018. More than one hundred cross country skiers from across the Maritime provinces are expected to test their racing skills on the beautiful trails of Killarney Lake Park this weekend. The races are the third and fourth in a seven-race series endorsed by Cross Country Ski New Brunswick and are also part of the City’s FROSTival winter celebration.

The races will be held on the newly expanded Killarney Lake Trail network which was recently upgraded to meet international standards thanks to a $200,000 project supported by all three levels of government. The trails will be groomed by a new state-of-the-art pisten bully snow groomer purchased by the City of Fredericton with $50,000 of support from five local business owners who donated through Wostawea’s $150,000 Trails for Life fundraising campaign in 2017.

“We are very pleased to have the Maritime Cup take place in our city on our beautifully groomed and upgraded trails,” said Mayor Mike O’Brien. “The City of Fredericton takes great pride in promoting an active and healthy lifestyle to our citizens and our visitors. A special thanks to the Wostawea Cross Country Ski Club for hosting this event and welcome to all those who have travelled from across the Maritimes to take part in this important and fun event.”

“Wostawea enjoys a strong partnership with the City of Fredericton and we are pleased with what we have been able to accomplish jointly at Killarney Lake Park over the last two years,” said John Ball, Wostawea President. “Both residents and visitors alike can now enjoy more than 40 km of first class cross country ski trails within the city limits, whether for competing, training or recreational purposes. We look forward to hosting the Maritime Cup and other ski events for many years to come.”

Wostawea Cross Country Ski Club has close to 700 members, and offers adult and youth cross country ski lessons every year from January to March at Killarney Lake Park. Club volunteers groom over 20 km of the Wostawea ski trails which are located in the UNB Woodlot and Kingswood Golf Course. Members also make extensive use of the more than 20 km of trails groomed by the City at Killarney Lake Park.

The club thanks the following partners for their support for the race event and club activities: The City of Fredericton, Cross Country Ski New Brunswick, the Province of New Brunswick, The Radical Edge, Kingswood Ventures, the University of New Brunswick, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Cross Country Ski Canada.

Skiers of all ages are welcome to participate in the Maritime Cup races. Race details and registration information can be found at
